In this case, the valves serve to open and close intake and exhaust openings in the combustion chamber in order to enable air to enter the combustion chamber via the intake opening and exhaust the combustion chamber via the exhaust opening and to extinguish an after-combustion after a combustion cycle. Such valves may be constructed as single-arm or two-arm valves. In the case of single-arm valves, the opening or closing of the valves is controlled by a control rod or an opening-closing member which can be moved to the extent that an axial movement of the valve results, it being possible for said axial movement to be actuated by means of a cam. In the case of two-arm valves, two valve arms, which can be moved together and also at an angle to one another, are present. As a result of this, it is possible to actuate the valve independently of one another.
It is also known for the valves to be actuated electrically. For this purpose, the valves may be constructed, for example, in the manner of flap valves and can be electrically actuated by means of an electromagnet arranged outside the combustion chamber. In this case, one armature of the electromagnet interacts with the respective valve arm, and thus the valve can be opened and closed as a function of the magnetic field of the electromagnet.
For the actuation of valves, the valves are preferably coupled to a valve cam or are closed by means of the valve cam. The valve cam may act directly on the valve arm. It is also possible for the valve cam to be coupled to an actuating element, which is actuated by means of a cam drive and the valve cam, by means of the cam drive, in turn being coupled to the valve arm. The valve cam is preferably formed on a camshaft, which is driven by the engine crankshaft. As a result of this, the valves can be opened and closed cyclically in succession.
To guarantee the opening and closing of the valves, the valve cam and the valve arm are in engagement in the closed state of the valves, which means that a movement of the valve cam results in a movement of the valve arm, said movement being converted into an opening or closing movement of the valves.
